LESSON 5
Students will understand:
- Â Â environmental sustainability initiatives must take a variety of considerations into account.
Social, Ecological, Economic Factors
Teacher will provide instruction on other factors for students to consider including social, ecological, legal, economic considerations, including by using case study examples of environmental sustainability initiatives that have faced challenges as a result of different factors.
E.g.
Consumer impact: paper bag bans
Political lobbying and economic considerations: electric vehicles
Indigenous land rights considerations: Kinder Morgan pipeline
Ecological: paper towels versus hand dryers
Geographic: hydro in Ontario versus Alberta
Idea Feasibility
Students will investigate the feasibility of their idea, including by developing a prototype of their idea and taking newly learned about factors into consideration. Based on their investigation, they will tweak their design.
Provide a graphic organizer for students that need support in considering different perspectives.
Students will be allowed to use different technologies as they develop their prototype.
LESSON 6
Students will understand:
- environmental sustainability projects and issues are tackled by professionals in the real world
Students will finalize their project idea
Off-site field trip
Students will travel to the site of an environmental sustainability site/ research base.
E.g. U of C Sustainability Tour

Formative: ongoing informal observation, weekly student-teacher conferencing, peer feedback, self assessment against rubric
