WEEK 1
LESSON 1
Students will be introduced to the unit, put into their groups and will start to brainstorm ideas.
Students will understand:
- Various aspects of what contributes to environmental sustainability
- The definition of environmental sustainability is broadly defined
Grouping Students
Teachers will put students into groups.
Defining Environmental Sustainability
Students will brainstorm in their groups the definition of environmental sustainability.
Teacher will collect ideas about what students believe environmental sustainability is, and will use guiding questions to probe and further inquire.
Unit Overview
Teacher will provide students an overview of the unit and their expected end project, including with use of exemplar.
Students will begin to brainstorm potential ideas for environmental sustainability project.
LESSON 2
Students will become more established in their groups.
Students will understand:
- Appropriate conduct for effective collaboration
Mini-Lesson on effective collaboration:
- Teacher provides mini lesson on effective collaboration including discussion on different roles, appropriate language to use for agreement/disagreement

Team Building Activity:
- Play a collaborative sustainability simulation game (e.g. Sustainable Shaun - http://ec.europa.eu/environment/sustainableshaun/game_en.htm, the Fish Game (https://cloudinstitute.org/fish-game/)) where student must make decisions on actions together
- Teacher monitors student groups to ensure appropriate use of language and decision-making is occurring

Group Contract and Team Name/Brainstorming
- Students will develop a group behaviours contract and will brainstorm a team name
- Students will continue to brainstorm potential ideas for environmental sustainability project

Formative: ongoing informal observation, weekly student-teacher conferencing, peer feedback
